MAKEUP TRICKS & TRENDS: MINIMALIST ROUTINE

Photograph by Lucie Hugary

This is a quick step by step guide for girls {or boys} who want to look flawless everyday with minimum effort, product, and time spent in front of a mirror. My favorite beauty trend of all time is minimal makeup which focuses on accentuating natural beauty. The focus of this look is perfecting the skin and slightly enhancing your features. This should only take about 5 minutes and should look pretty, polished, and natural. Always make sure to have a good skin care routine to keep skin looking and feeling it’s best. Eating a healthy and balanced diet as well as making sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day helps keep  skin looking healthy and hydrated.

Essentials: Concealer, Foundation or Tinted Moisturizer, Powder, Mascara, Blush, Lip Balm

Extras: Primer, Brow Powder, Highlight Powder, Eye Liner

1.Primer: Apply primer on the skin. This will help smooth the skin as well as allows your makeup glide on nicely.

Favorites: Smashbox Photofinish, MAC Prep & Prime , Bare Minerals Prime Time

2.Concealer/Corrector: Only use a corrector if you have major under eye circles, in which case you would neutralize  purple-drown dark tones with a peach corrector and blue darkness with a pink corrector. Next use a concealer that is one shade lighter than your complexion to brighten the skin under your eyes. Use a concealer brush for precise application and pat with your fingers to blend.

3.Foundation: Use foundation or a tinted moisturizer to even out your skins tone and texture. Always make sure to check your foundation/tinted moisturizer color in natural light. It should disappear and blend with your skin tone. If you are one of those lucky people with no pores and perfect skin, you can skip this step all together or just use a tinted moisturizer with spf.

Favorites: Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer spf 20 {Use this for a more dewy finish}, Makeup Forever Matte Velvet Foundation {Use this for a flawless matte full coverage finish}

4.Powder: Set concealer with loose powder by lightly dusting powder with a powder brush. If you have an oily t-zone or complexion, apply the powder to the rest of your face as well. This will keep concealer under eyes from creasing and will avoid greasy skin.

Extra: To add warmth to skin use a bronzing powder on areas of the face where the sun would naturally bronze your face such as over cheeks, nose, forehead and chin.

5.Blush: Dust a neutral shade of blush onto the apples of your cheeks, blending up towards the hairline. Make sure to blend well to avoid an unnatural streak.

Favorites: Nars Orgasm Blush, MAC Prim & Proper

Extra: Use a light layer of a bright shade of blush over the neutral shade and blend for an extra pop of color.

6.Highlight: For a more radiant finish, use a highlighting powder on the cheekbones as well as underneath the brow bone. Avoid using highlighting powders that are too shiny in the day time.

1. Mascara: This is my favorite beauty product of all time. It is the one thing I use when I use nothing else. Batting your eyelashes can get you out of a lot of trouble when you’re a girl. Coating your bottom lashes can look a little dramatic for daytime so I would suggest skipping it unless you’re in that kind of mood. I prefer black mascara over any color, however dark plum tones are beautiful and make brown/hazel eyes pop. For a softer look use brown, but I never do.

Extra: Use a brown kohl liner along the top and/or bottom lash line and smudge. This creates more definition and the appearance of a thicker lash line.

Favorites: Dior Diorshow Mascara, Teddy Kohl Liner by MAC

2.Brows: Using a thin angled brush, fill brows in lightly with a shadow that blends with your natural brow color or one shade lighter. This helps brows look strong, defined, and polished. For unruly brows, use a clear brow gel to keep brows in place all day.

Favorite: Cork Eye Shadow by MAC.

1: Lip balm/ Lip stain: Apply your favorite lip balm to keep lips soft. Neutral lip stains are also great for people who’s lips blend with their skin tone. Apply the stain and let it dry. Then apply lip balm over the stain.

Favorites: Chapstick Classic or Cherry, Nivea A Kiss of Moisture Regular or Cherry, MAC Tinted Lip Conditioners spf15, Stila Lip and Cheek Stain, Vaseline
